[NF] Meeting our Ed!

Gentlemen & ladies,
It was nice to see our forum benefactor Ed again over the weekend as he had been in a Python Conference in Dublin and managed to get over to England in order to see the Manchester City/Chelsea football (Soccer) game yesterday despite all the odds of weather being stacked against him with this “Beast from the East” set of bad weather that has beset us Brits for the last week,.

As I made Ed an honorary Man City supporter when I last saw him a the VFP conference in Atlanta in 2007 it was also nice that our team secured a win. It was a good game, only let down by the fact that our tickets were in the area reserved for the Chelsea supporters but it was all good friendly banter! Ed wasn’t brave enough to wear his light blue and white scarf during the game but it came out once the game was over!

Also lovely to see Linda, his wife who also attended the game.

I didn’t have time to extend our thanks for him continuing to support the Profox list here despite the fact that he is no longer doing any VFP work, but I am sure you all extend my thanks to him.

If we’d got chatting about things VFP we’d have broken into a few more bottles of wine over the Italian meal we all had after the game and he’d have had difficulty getting his early flight at 8:00am for onward transit back home.

Great to see you again Ed!!

What the Halibut? Where's a link to a pic of you and Ed hanging out??? Come on - you know you owe us at least that much!!!
To be fair, it was Linda who took the photos, and we were stuck in metal tubes all day today (Manchester -> Dublin -> Washington, DC -> San Antonio). But now I'm back home, and before collapsing from exhaustion, I put together a quick album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/u9dQUxwBBpCQwuR32

That said, I can't thank Dave enough for being a wonderful host. Linda and I had planned a nice, leisurely weekend in Manchester after my conference in Dublin, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Dublin had the worst weather in decades while we were there (https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/people-urged-to-stay-indoors-as-blizzard-set-to-threaten-life-and-limb-1.3411319), and the airport was shut down for two days, canceling our original flights. We ended up flying into Manchester Sunday afternoon, where Dave was waiting for us. He drove us to the stadium, where we had a great time watching City win, even though we were stuck in the Chelsea section. He the took us to our hotel, but then it turned out that when we re-booked due to the storm, we had been moved to a different hotel much further away. No worries, as Dave the chauffeur got us to our hotel, waited while we dropped off our things, and then drove us back to his charming town, where we were joined by his wife,
and had an excellent meal. He then drove us all the way back to our hotel. We had to fly out early the next morning, and I can honestly say that without Dave's help, none of that would have been possible. Oh, and don't even get me started about the problems getting the tickets!

Next time we are able to make it to Manchester, we owe him several pints!

Fascinating to put faces to names of people I feel I know well and count as friends but have never met. Pity you went to the wrong Manchester team, the noisy neighbours 😊 Glad you had a good time.

Hey there Ed,

Thanks so much for posting those pics. I would have initially suggested
you might want to point us to exactly who-is-who in the pics. However, I
remember recently you had posted on the forum about some Blog post on
your website - at least I think that's the deal. I was surprised - since
you look so differently with a beard. As I remember prior pics of yours
after doing your bike marathons and you didn't have a beard. As such, in
the pics you posted - I know its Dave who goes sans beard!

Thanks again for posting the pics. Like others have already said - its
always nice to put a face to a name!!!

Cheers Dave!

No worries, as Dave the chauffeur got us to our hotel, waited while we dropped off our things, and then drove us back to his charming town, where we were joined by his wife

and had an excellent meal. He then drove us all the way back to our hotel. We had to fly out early the next morning, and I can honestly say that without Dave's help, none of that would have been possible. Oh, and don't even get me started about the problems getting the tickets!
Next time we are able to make it to Manchester, we owe him several pints!

I captioned each of the photos with names - they should show up when viewing the photos individually.

My wife convinced me to grow my beard about a year and a half ago. Saves a lot on razor blades! And it was very cold both in Dublin and Manchester. The first thing I did when I got to Dublin was buy a warm Irish wool sweater and wool cap; those combined with my ruddy complexion made me fit right in!

My bad - as I didn't click the pics - since they were already nicely
sized on that webpage. But, I just did now - saw the caption - and I
even made a comment.

Andy - very interesting indeed. The whole webpage write-up about the
book seems like a bit of a spoiler. But, then at one point they stop
relaying the story - so that they didn't relay any spoilers.

The writer, Carlos Bueno - his name sounds REALLY Familiar.

Anyway - sounds like a cool book. Too bad it wasn't avail. years ago -
as I would surely have gotten it for my son. He's way too old for it now
- as he is 16 - and he is already WELL Versed in programming - since he
did Python last summer for an Internship at Brookhaven Natl Labs in LI -
working with a researcher doing research on some special atoms!
